Angel Olsen’s New Video Is an Art Deco Sci-Fi Fantasy

The visual world that Angel Olsen crafted around her last album, My Woman, largely centered on a shiny, metallic tinsel wig that ended up becoming a bonafide obsession for the singer-songwriter. In her “Shut Up Kiss Me” video from three years ago, she chose to wear fairly ordinary pieces of clothing (blue jeans, white Converse sneakers, and a sporty silky green jacket) just to let that shock of a wig truly stand out. Then, on her following tour, the artist paired the wig with some custom throwback pieces made in collaboration with her friend Bailey Raynor, creating classic silhouettes that referenced both the old school glamour of Sophia Loren and the sculpted gowns of golden era Christian Dior.

Now, though, Angel Olsen has announced her upcoming album with a new song and video that shows off a very different look; albeit one that feels like a natural trajectory from her tinsel-wigged past. The new black-and-white visuals for “All Mirrors” are an ethereal showcase for Olsen’s synth-heavy new sound—and there’s some fittingly fantastical fashion as well. “I wanted to go for a Sunset Boulevard time period, and I needed what I was wearing to be something out of some sort of minimalist labyrinthine dream,” Olsen says, which is immediately apparent in the structural white gown by Canadian designer Sid Neigum that she wears at the start of the video.

As the video progresses, things get even more dramatic. Olsen dons a black slip dress while her double wears a headdress made by Olsen’s friend and wardrobe designer Maya Marin, who created the standout, kokoshnik-inspired piece from zip ties and found jewelry. “Much of the video inspiration was pulled from 1920s versions of sci-fi, or an Art Deco kind of sci-fi, like Metropolis and Aelita.” Olsen might be taking her look in a much more surreal and cinematic direction, but she hasn’t forgotten her previous signatures. Ending with a full-on tinsel dress, it closes the door on the most recent chapter of her musical career—and marks a thrilling new beginning.
