Mark Ronson Takes the Men’s Flare Leg out for a Spin

Today, at the Louis Vuitton Spring 2020 show, Mark Ronson arrived with his artfully large Jimmy Neutron coif and a crisp invitation in his hand. The DJ-producer (and non-sapiosexual) slouch-posed for cameras in a rumpled cream button-up that was semi-tucked into his tan pants. In fact, some of the crinkly shirt came loose and ever-so-slightly folded over the sides of the waist. But never mind that detail. Here, a little shine was in order: He posed with one hand in his pocket that revealed the flash of a small gold watch. And then there were Ronson’s pants. They were not quite high-waisted or low-slung but instead sat comfortably at his belly button. On his waist was a standard leather brown belt beloved by dads and Ivy League students alike. The hot factor here? The flare of the pants and their diamond-cutting sharp pleat down the middle. They were a little bit elongated and hung down nonchalantly over his white sneakers.

Like Harry Styles, Ronson is taking the flared pant silhouette for a spin. While the flare could come off as a tad costume-y, Ronson executes the wide-leg cut with panache. His otherwise safe and buttoned-up outfit benefits from an unexpected dose of sassiness. It reminds me of forever crush Trip Fontaine from The Virgin Suicides—if he were smarter and less flamboyant. Sure, the flare doesn’t quite have the full anachronistic sleazy-chic of the bell bottom, but a tinge of retro seediness goes a long way. In other words, Ronson not only has style—he has flare!
