Just wanted to shoot you a few low/high tech ideas that might be helpful; Archimedes’ screw powered by small paddles on one end, might be just the thing that could fill the holding pond without any work. Plus if he makes the pond twice the size needed it could also be used to farm fish. (fish poo makes good fertilizer). Also might want to consider a neutron back scatter sensor and a small camera on a tethered H2 balloon. That would be easy to make and low on resources (about the size of a laser pointer) but would provide a surface level resource map of the local area (within 20-40 miles, using neutrons from the sun reflected off atomic nuclei) as well as it might help scout watching local game.

Should be pretty simple to set up medium/long range sensors daisy chaining info back to the pod via RF mesh networks either on balloons or high vantage points (or the futuristic equivalent) powered by tiny solar cells and a battery pack to keep them running at night. I am a female veteran inside voice Just a mouth shirt. Should be pretty resource efficient, and won’t have to deal with lots of interference. Good idea. First priority should be “identify and start collecting resources”. T-shirt design near me. A sensor mesh net would be a great idea but might take a lot of rare earths and shouldnt be built until stable resouces are coming it. Best to spend the resources he has, on one or two good sensors and a robot/tools to dig it out. Next priority should be “stable power”. Cheap usable power is directy proportional to the standard of living. Solar is finicky, doesnt scale well and has low power density. It will suck when he gets snow on his pannels. Io is going to get hungery. I’d go with a clean minifridge sized thorium reactor (if polywell fusion is out of his tech range) Then build a building around the pod. Simple log cabin with aerogel insulation.

It would suck to spend a week inside the pod during a winter storm. I am a female veteran inside voice Just a mouth shirt. May want to build a larger assembler after he gets the power plant running. Then I would make an acoustic guitar by hand. “No soul in one made in an assembler.” ? also time to start learning the local language without the translator. I’m cool with solar, but it has some disadvantages that I would not want to rely on during an upcoming and unknown winter weather. See as how it is an alien world we don’t know how dark it will get or how many days are going to be overcast. No matter what tech advances humans make in the next few years will always be limited to at most whatever amount of watts per square meter you get at the surface.
No engineer worth his pocket protector would design or build a deep space life pod with only solar panels to provide power. I am a female veteran inside voice Just a mouth shirt. Especially if you have to eject at a solar orbit further out than 2 AU’s. (at twice the orbital radius solar drops power output to 1/4 of what we have on earth) The story can remain the same, if the on-board nuclear or fusion generator was in someway damaged during the explosion. Solar panels would make a great backup. The are easy to make (if you have tech #3) and will provide power (unreliable as it is) enough to rebuild or fix a real power plant. The other chapter when Russell was talking about the Lancer doesn’t leave much doubt that he’s the only one left.
