Rihanna Gives the Flip-Flop Heel a Bad Gal Twist

Love it or loathe it, the flip-flop heel is continuing into fall. The tricky ‘90s-inspired shoe was the breakout hit of the summer: it was spotted on stars such as Kim Kardashian West (who ignited the trend), Kendall Jenner, Katie Holmes, and so many others. Clearly the thong stiletto is not going anywhere anytime soon—Rihanna is keeping the momentum going with a new seasonal twist. Last night, the Bad Gal herself hit the streets of New York City, just one night after throwing a party for her new autobiography, in a monochromatic going-out look that was all about making her footwear the focal point.

Opting for an all-white outfit (yes, you can do all-white after Labor Day), Rihanna wore strappy square-toe flip-flop heels that instantly grabbed the eye. Her minimal strapless dress and streamlined top-handle bag, meanwhile, were chic companions. Of course it wouldn’t be a complete Riri look without statement sunglasses (tiny in this case) and mounds of jewels, either. She decked herself out in shimmering chain necklaces, bracelets, and even an anklet, to draw even more attention to her controversial shoes. Because if someone’s going to pull it off with total ease, it would be her.
