The most Instagrammable hat this summer isn’t a worn-in baseball cap. Nor is it last year’s absurdist, oversized Jacquemus straw number. Instead, in an unlikely twist of fate, it’s the humble cowboy hat. Earlier today, Kendall Jenner posted a gallery of scenic images of herself enjoying the dog days of summer—think a dreamy Bob Ross-style sunset, a cluster of green grapes, or a (slightly ominous) image of Jenner’s shadow on asphalt. We’re unsure of what she’s wearing in the latter snap, but we can spot the shadow of a cowboy hat with a devilishly upturned brim. A few hours later, Hailey Bieber posted an image of herself perched on a ledge from her vacation in Jamaica, sporting a white bathing suit, an oversized white men’s button-up—maybe Justin’s?—and a pale straw cowboy hat.

Of course, these two powerhouse models aren’t the first to sport the cowboy hat. Lizzo wore a siren red cowboy hat to go with her bedazzled two-piece look in the music video for her track “Tempo,” featuring Missy Elliott, who herself was partial to a cowboy hat during her rise back in the late-’90s. Diplo has been habitually donning the ranchero topper all summer long, whether to complement his flashy VMAs outfit, or simply while hammering a painting to the wall in an off-duty plaid shirt. He even sported the hat on a paddleboard, wearing none other a T-shirt with a photo of himself wearing a cowboy hat. How meta is that?

Of course, it’s Lil Nas X who initially set off the cowboy hat trend with his country-inspired, chart-storming hit “Old Town Road.” The upstart rapper’s cowboy hats, which come in ranging incarnations of cow print and fire truck red, are practically attached to his head. Not to mention, at a VMAs afterparty only two days ago, Miley Cyrus and her father Billy Ray Cyrus were snapped by Diplo himself singing “Old Town Road” while toting matching tan cowboy hats. In other words: Summer’s not over yet, so grab a cowboy hat, giddy up, and ‘gram away.
