Billie Eilish Brings a Touch of The Handmaid’s Tale to the AMAs

When Riccardo Tisci sent Victorian bonnets down the Spring 2020 Burberry runway in London this past September, fashion critics immediately assumed he was referencing the dystopian headgear of popular TV show The Handmaid’s Tale, based on the Margaret Atwood book of the same name. Tisci didn’t clock the reference, though—he had never seen the show—and he insisted he was just drawing on the brand’s Victorian roots.

Billie Eilish brought the Gothic headpiece to the American Music Awards red carpet earlier this evening, pairing the crystal mesh bonnet hat with a face-obscuring veil with a custom Burberry Vintage check set. In her classic slouchy style, the young pop star—who is nominated for a whopping four awards tonight—went with an oversize silhouette, but the baggy T-shirt wasn’t completely boyish thanks to matching crystal mesh sleeves. Leave it to her to make a Victorian bonnet work with what’s otherwise an ensemble fit for a skater. With Eilish leading the way, the centuries-old cap might just be poised to become the next big trend in streetwear.
