That’s me at my eighth grade graduation in a long satin dress I sewed myself. It was the week of my 14th birthday. Check out that 70s sewing pattern style, will ya? Clothing choices were limited back then in pre-online days. My sister, Patty, and I both loved Bowie and the fashion we saw in magazines. So we sewed our clothes.

By this time I’d made several skirts, pants and dresses. It’s Paddy Not Patty Ye Feckin Eejit Shirt! On graduation day from our little catholic school I asked my teacher if I could wear this hat purchased with my hard earned baby sitting money. She glared and said I should ask the pastor. I asked the pastor. He said I should ask my teacher. So, yep, sounds like a yes to me. And can we talk about these white platform shoes? No doubt inspired by the shoes Bowie wore that year. The cameo choker? I loved that, too.

I think Patty split the cost and shared it and It’s Paddy Not Patty Ye Feckin Eejit Shirt. Most of all I was psyched about leaving my grade school where I was harassed and assaulted. (More about that some other time.) I would join my sister and friends at an all girls high school. My sister Patty is coming to celebrate with me today. My OG bestie! Yay.
