Tessa Thompson and Evan Rachel Wood Lean Into Western Style in Beck’s New Dev Hynes-Directed Video

Beck is officially back—he’s releasing his forthcoming album Hyperspace next month—though clearly he’s not luxuriating in the spotlight alone. With the video for “Uneventful Days,” the first single off his new record, Beck assembles a host of unexpected collaborators, including the likes of Blood Orange’s Dev Hynes, who directed the video and actresses Tessa Thompson, Evan Rachel Wood, and Alia Shawkat.

Thompson and Wood make particularly memorable and stylish appearances in the disjointed clip. It starts off with a diner scene that brings together prototypical Americana elements, including a gingham place mat and retro toy cars that neatly fall into line near a coffee pot. Styled by Akua Murray-Adoboe and Emily Schubert, the duo’s outfits similarly bear this classic influence, albeit one that veers more Western. Thompson dons a cowboy hat and a brown leather jacket from Murray-Adoboe’s personal archive, while Wood wears a fringed fire-engine red blouse that Schubert handmade herself. Shawkat, on the other hand, wears her own vintage pieces in the clip (including a watercolor-esque Issey Miyake top).

While the narrative never quite coheres—new characters seem to pop up at random, like the one in a Beck T-shirt crying in his car or the other who’s falling asleep in his office chair surrounded by Beck posters—there’s a clear throughline at least in terms of the retro aesthetic. Who knew Beck was such a vintage fashion fanatic?
