A$AP Rocky Is Officially Back With “Babushka Boi”

A$AP Rocky might be patient zero of last year’s babushka headscarf trend—but the look began as the result of some very unfortunate circumstances. First, the rapper fell off a Razor scooter while trying to pop a wheelie, before covering up his injury with a yellow headscarf, that he later wore publicly for the first time on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah. Not long after that babushka debut, he walked the red carpet at the LACMA Art and Film Gala in Los Angeles with a Gucci silk scarf wrapped around his head. And this open-armed embrace of a trend initially associated with Eastern European geriatrics is only growing more pointed—Rocky already dropped acid while wearing his favorite accessory in the Dexter Navy-directed video for “Kids Turned Out Fine” from earlier this year, and now he’s dropped a new song, “Babushka Boi,” with a visual that pays homage to the titular headscarf.
“Babushka Boi” is the first song that Rocky has released since being released from jail in Sweden, where he spent over a month in custody on a hotly disputed assault charge. It seems Rocky is already using the experience as artistic inspiration—as part of the video’s conceit, the rapper appears a bank robber who turns cops, here characterized as literal pigs, into sausages. And true to the song’s title, Rocky dons that original yellow bandana babushka all throughout the clip, which he pairs with a tweed suit jacket. A lot might have happened in Rocky’s life over the past few months, but he’s still happy to take his babushka obsession back to its origins.
